A Glance at Depew
Adopted from Information obtained from the Depew Village Historian

The village of Depew in Erie County, New York is named for Chauncey Mitchel Depew, a railroad man, attorney, statesman and orator. Depew was incorporated as a village on July 23, 1894, sixteen months after Chauncey Depew chose a six acre site north of the railroad tracks in the township of Lancaster. The National Car Wheel Works, the Union Car Company and the Brassworks had been built and were in operation by 1893.
Chauncey Depew and many of his influential and wealthy friends formed a land company. They incorporated it as the Depew Development Company and purchased one thousand acres of flat farmland on both sides of the tracks. They envisioned the area as the home of the greatest industrial municipality to be between New York and Chicago.
At the time, Buffalo and the surrounding area had the greatest potential. Buffalo in the 1890's was one of the nation's great railroad centers. Depew viewed the area as a profitable place to invest. Huge coal trestles were located in Cheektowaga and Buffalo. They supplied coal to 27 different rail lines intersecting in Buffalo. By 1898, 4 1/2 million tons of anthracite coal and 2 1/2 tons of bituminous coal were coming into Buffalo. That year, at least 250 trains entered and left Buffalo every 24 hours. The transportation on the Erie Canal began to die down as the railroads gradually took over.
Residents of Depew had been there long before Depew was created. They were part of the town of Lancaster to the East of Transit Road and Cheektowaga to the West. Farmers, general store owners, attorneys, and doctors were some of the people living in the area. They had access to Buffalo along the railroads and by horse and buggy. When work began on the New York Central shops, the settlers saw abundant job opportunities would draw hundreds of people to the area. The people would need more services than the town had been able to supply. The settlers held a meeting to discuss the future and decided that they would work to establish a village and call it Depew. Today, Depew is the largest village in Erie County.
